While sitting on a beach in Barnstable, Mass., in May, celebrating my recent graduation from Boston University, my phone pinged with an email from a parent.
“Henry, keep an eye on Milton girls’ lacrosse,” it read.
A week later, I made the trip as Milton (Mass.) sought its first playoff victory in 18 years.
Milton won easily. It was 10-0 after 15 minutes. It wasn’t a nail-biter, but it was one of my favorite sports reporting experiences.
I saw a community rally around a team. Milton’s youth program was in attendance, and its director told me how inspirational that win was for all of the girls looking to step on the varsity field one day. Players and coaches were thrilled to see me there, and each conversation led me to someone new to talk to. By the time I left, I’d spoken with 10 players and coaches for a 300-word story.
It reminded me of the impact this sport has, and how much more coverage the talented athletes in this region deserve.
I never played lacrosse growing up. Ask me to scoop the ball off the turf, make an accurate pass or put a shot on target, and it would take at least a few tries for each.
What I do have is a lifelong passion for sports storytelling. Starting at age 6, I would mute baseball games and call them myself, with each team’s lineup card and stats spread out in front of me. I gave a graduation speech in middle school about my dream of becoming a sportswriter.
I joined the Boston Globe high school sports desk in July 2024, and have covered just about every sport the MIAA offers, including girls’ lacrosse last spring. I began freelancing for Seamans Media in December 2024, where I have covered Division 3 basketball, Connecticut hoops and New Hampshire soccer and baseball.
When an opportunity arose to become a full-time writer at New England Lacrosse Journal, it was a no-brainer.
I am delighted to join the talented team at Seamans Media, where I will be focused on girls’ coverage in the region. I’ll be asking plenty of questions so I can answer yours.
