There are players who leave indelible marks on their schools. And then there are players who leave indelible marks on the coaches that game-planned against them — and still failed to stop them.
Bowdoin face-off man Ethan Barnard (Boxford, Mass.) is the latter.
A draw specialist for prep juggernaut Deerfield Academy, he spent his first two years at MIAA power St. John’s Prep, where he terrorized opposing teams with his combination of speed and aggression. It led to Division 1 looks and an early commitment to Vermont, prior to the new Sept. 1 rule prohibiting commitment until the fall of a student-athlete’s junior year.
“I committed to UVM going into my sophomore year and I think a lot of it was just, I was pretty young still,” said Barnard. “I loved coach (Chris) Feifs at UVM, but as I got a little bit older, I realized I wanted a little bit different kind of a college experience.
