As the fall lacrosse season begins to wind down later this month, there’s one takeaway from the weekend tournaments and showcases I’ve covered so far that stands out the most.
There are prep and high school teams that play together at these events. And they do so in a way that doesn’t violate NEPSAC or MIAA rules.
I recently asked prep coaches what their ideal model for fall lacrosse would be. This story was sparked by Road to Prep’s Battle Ground showcase, where prep teams — and even one MIAA team — got together to compete in a one-day event in front of over 50 college coaches.
High school coaching staffs didn’t have any involvement in the coordination of the event. NEPSAC and MIAA rules prohibit that. Players essentially entered the showcase just as they would for any club tournament but were rostered with their high school team. It made for an exciting day of lacrosse.
And as my tournament coverage has rolled onward — I was at PrimeTime’s Laxtoberfest and Fall Classic — I noticed a few more MIAA teams competing in a field dominated by club programs. Again, these players entered independently without any affiliation with their school and official coaching staff.
So what is MIAA coaches’ ideal model for fall and offseason lacrosse? I talked to a handful of coaches for the second installment of this two-part series.
