Two days before Wesleyan would open its season with a league game at Williams on March 2, its practice, at least in the players’ estimation, ran a little longer than normal.

When it was over, pregnant coach Kim Williams gathered her team and left it with these words: “I’ve been feeling contractions. I’m going to go give birth.”

Less than 24 hours later, Williams was a mom and her players had a new appreciation for sacrifice.

“That raised the bar as far as excuses for missing practice,” said senior midfielder Abby Horst (Pomfret, Conn.).
