In his first year as head coach at Champlain Valley Union last year, Tom Garvey was relegated to Zoom meetings, and drawing up workout plans and drills for his players to do on their own.
In his second year he was part and parcel to deja vu, watching his team bookend its season with 8-7 wins over Burr & Burton, as the Redhawks rallied in the Division 1 final to grab their eighth straight state title.
“We had some meetings and we could work out online on Zoom twice a week,” Garvey said of his first season. “I didn’t get to see what it was like previously, but a lot of guys came out and put in the work. I was excited about the participation that we saw.
“Our first game against Burr & Burton, we end up playing the team we (would) play in the championship, a very good team. At that moment we all got a sense for the team’s level of compete.”
