Against all reasonable odds, Chariho (R.I.) High School submitted a season for the books, culminating with a 15-9 win over previously undefeated North Kingstown to win the Rhode Island Division 2 title.
“The beginning of this season was very shaky,” Chariho coach Brittney Godbout said. “We initially only had nine returning varsity players and only 15 players returning. The coaching staff reached out to other Chariho coaches to try to recruit girls (from other sports) to finally field a team of 29, in which 12 of them had never played lacrosse before.”
The team’s only loss was a 20-10 defeat that came at the hands of North Kingstown earlier in the spring.
Heading into the finals, Godbout and her squad spent countless hours breaking down film of their opponent’s games and formulated a game plan that required strong execution to work.
