GREENWICH, Conn. — When Brunswick and Lawrenceville met on April 10, it took overtime to settle things. Brunswick was the victor that day, and ever since, it felt like they were heading toward a rematch at Prep Nationals. The two powerhouse programs have remained in the top two spots in the national polls for weeks, and both dispatched their semifinal opponents on Friday with relatively comfortable outings.
On Sunday, the rematch arrived. In a game that featured a brilliant gameplan from coaches and flawless execution from the players, Lawrenceville won, 14-5, firmly cementing themselves as the best team in America.
The Big Red grabbed control immediately with Conor Gately scoring a pair of goals in quick succession to give Lawrenceville an early lead. Two minutes after those, he added his third, completing a first-quarter hat trick that set the tone for the game.
Mikey Rooney scored two in the first quarter as well, and Sawyer English added another. It was a 6-1 opening frame for Lawrenceville. Trailing by that many goals that early, let alone at any point, was uncharted territory for Brunswick.
