In terms of making an exit, nobody did it quite like Portsmouth High School coach Mary Squire.
In her final season with the program after a decade at the helm, Squire led the Clippers to their third consecutive Division 2 championship, and fifth in her tenure, without losing a game against another team in their division.
Portsmouth (19-2) defeated rival Winnacunnet, 10-5, in the championship game at Southern New Hampshire University.
While juniors Anna Smith and Sallie Squire — the coach’s daughter — led the attack during the season, scoring 57 and 56 goals, respectively, it was two freshmen (Katie Campel and Julia Roelofs) who each scored twice in the final, proof that even with a new coach, the program should remain formidable.
