The Blue Wave didn’t reach their ultimate goal of another Connecticut state championship this past spring. However, they did manage to defeat all comers in the New England Lacrosse Showcase. The team played like their namesake, directing currents of varying voracity at their opponents on offense and defense. Darien’s undefeated run was punctuated by big wins over Concord-Carlisle and Winchester, but they were met with more resistance from teams outside of the New England region.
A comprehensive 7-4 win over Delbarton (N.J.) in the NELS championship game belied the true battle that the Blue Wave faced in the semis against Ridgewood (N.J.) but life is good when one of the best attackmen in the country can go up against two defenders and score whenever he had space and wherewithal to do so. Matthew Minicus’ low to high shot claimed many a goalkeeper’s pride, much to the delight of the team’s fans and parents. Another Minicus from Darien, another masterclass of an attackman.
