WORCESTER, Mass. -- In a battle of East vs. West, top-ranked Sandwich took on No. 3 Wahconah Regional in the MIAA Division 4 championship game on Wednesday.
A four-goal Wahconah outburst in the third quarter gave the Warriors all the breathing room they'd need, earning the program’s first state championship with a hard-fought, 8-7 victory.
“It feels great,” Wahconah coach Joe O’Neill said. “I’ve been coaching some of these guys since they were 10 years old, traveling all over the Northeast together, so to have it end in the way it did was absolutely amazing. It puts the icing on all the hard work they put in over the years.”
While the offense created the second-half cushion, it was Wahconah’s defensive performance that frustrated Sandwich.
