Growing up, there is always the one family vacation that everyone remembers. The one holiday where everyone comes together and agrees to be on their best behavior, and not to upset grandma and grandpa.
Memorial Day has become that particular celebration for lacrosse fans as far back as the 1970s. It is, of course, a day to remember military personnel who sacrificed their lives in service of the United States first, and that is not lost on the lacrosse community.
In the modern day, the NCAA men’s (and now women’s) lacrosse championships for Divisions 1, 2 and 3 are all played on Memorial Day weekend.
The championship sites shift and, by the turn of the century, had become college lacrosse’s No. 1 money-making prospect as NFL stadiums in heavily-populated areas began to host the games.
