Local UNC duo locks up Apuzzo, Boston College for ACC title

NEWTON, Mass. – Emma Trenchard let Sam Apuzzo get the best of her less than 90 seconds into Sunday’s Atlantic Coast Conference women's lacrosse championship game at Alumni Stadium.

Over the course of the next 58-plus minutes, the Windsor, Conn., native kept the reigning Tewaaraton Award winner from getting into her rhythm, as defending ACC tournament champion North Carolina rallied to deliver No. 1-ranked Boston College its first loss of the season in a 15-13 stunner.

“I was just hoping to disrupt her play,” the sophomore defender said of Apuzzo. “Everything pretty much goes through her. She’s a great player. She’s a great competitor. I knew it was going to be a challenge.
