Even before this high school lacrosse season was canceled in Massachusetts, longtime Winchester High School coach John Pirani had made his decision.

As first reported by the Boston Herald, Pirani has resigned as head coach, a position he held since 1989 and one that produced, among other achievements, state championships in 1999, 2000 and 2019.

“You know, as a mortal, we’re all subject to the time issue,” said Pirani, 68, on Thursday. “I never wanted to quit. I wouldn’t have if I didn’t think it was time. But I feel good about my time in the game, the position my program is in and the position Eastern Mass. lacrosse is in.”
