As a new boys tournament nears for Independent School League programs in 2020, the girls have been trailblazers.
Four years into their own tournament, things are going well. Maybe even better than expected, said Thayer coach Anni Zukauskas.
"I think (the feeling toward a tournament initially was), 'We'll give it a try. We'll see how it goes and then revisit this,'" said Zukauskas, who has served in at least a co-head coach role in Braintree, Mass., since 2014, with solo duties the last four years. "So, to me, it never felt secure."
Now, four tournament champions have been crowned in ISL girls lacrosse. Benefits have extended into improved visibility with college recruiters. There's also a community service initiative that has raised awareness and money for various causes.
