How Tyler Canto developed into Towson’s starter

Billerica, Mass., native and UMass Lowell transfer comes into his own

Towson goalkeeper Tyler Canto wanted to radically improve his game, but he wasn’t sure how.

That is until his goalkeeper coach, Andy Shilling, mentioned how a Johns Hopkins goalie trained at a boxing gym in the offseason and was having a great year.

Canto followed his lead, training at a boxing clinic during the offseason to improve his hand speed, and that unorthodox approach has paid off. After not playing for the Tigers last season, the Billerica, Mass., native has been a stalwart for the CAA contenders.
