The Boston College defense had its work cut out for it heading into its 2021 NCAA tournament semifinal matchup against top-ranked North Carolina. Standing in front of the Eagles’ goal was one of the top scorers in the nation, Jamie Ortega.
Ortega was a senior who was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award, and was the ACC Attacker of the Year and a unanimous first-team All-American. At that point, she was third in the nation with 81 goals, and she had scored four or more goals in 14 of her 19 games.
Boston College head coach Acacia Walker-Weinstein opted to match up against her with freshman Sydney Scales (Walpole, Mass.).
Ortega got off to a hot start, factoring into all of the team’s first three goals, assisting on the first two and scoring the third to help the Tar Heels jump out to a 3-1 lead.
