How Sam Cleveland got back into the ISL as Lawrence coach

In the spring of 2015, Sam Cleveland was finishing up his high school lacrosse career at Rivers School, which included being named team MVP his senior year in addition to two All-League selections in the Independent School League.

In the spring of 2021, Sam will be back in the ISL again — this time as a first-year head coach at Lawrence Academy.

“I felt like it was such a good opportunity that it would just be tough to have said you turned it down,” Cleveland said. “I didn’t go into the 2020 year or 2019 thinking I’m definitely going to be a head coach soon or I really wanted to, but if you had asked me at any point I certainly would have been interested in it.”

Cleveland’s return to the ISL was actually scheduled to happen this past spring, but COVID-19 and 2020 had other plans. He was supposed to join the coaching staff at his alma mater and be an assistant to his former head coach, Justin Walker (and current colleague in the Fighting Clams club organization).
