Even in pain, Katie Athanasoulas couldn’t stop thinking about the timing.
It was just a few weeks before the start of her sophomore year at Middlesex School and she was playing a pickup game with teammates from Mass Elite. She dodged, planted awkwardly and tore her ACL.
In a flash, she’d lost her fall field hockey season, her winter ice hockey season and most of her spring lacrosse season – plus, and maybe most importantly, a key stretch of valuable recruiting time.
What she gained – in time – was a bond with two of her classmates that’s only grown stronger since.
