The Amherst College men’s lacrosse team was at its highest point at the end of the 2019 season.
Its 18 wins were the most in a single season in four years. It beat NESCAC rivals Tufts and Williams (who had beaten it in the conference tournament semifinals) five days apart in the NCAA tournament to advance to the national championship game for the first time.
Then two years of off-field turmoil brought it all crashing down.
Two coaching changes, nearly two full seasons of play lost to a pandemic, and a self-imposed postseason ban because of a racial altercation left the program in crisis mode.
