It goes without saying turnovers on the field are detrimental to a lacrosse team. But turnovers off the field can be just as pervasive a problem to a team's success.
Such is the case for Bedford (Mass.) High School. Over the past six years, the Buccaneers saw coaching turnover four separate times.
The most recent coaching change came after current head coach Alan Chang stepped away from the team for a medical leave. But filling Chang's shoes is someone quite familiar with the program. Ashley Martell, the Bedford girls' lacrosse coach for the last 13 years, took the helm and began steering the Buccaneers in the right direction.
As Martell remembers, it was a split-second decision to take over. Bedford's athletic director Keith Mangan approached Martell about the position at the 11th hour.
