On this episode of New England Lacrosse Journal’s “Chasing The Goal” podcast, hosts Kyle Devitte and Jack Piatelli were joined by Amherst head coach Sean Woods.
A Newport, R.I., native, Woods has had a long and successful coaching career. He coached at traditional Division 3 power Washington College, Division 2 Mars Hill and Division 1 Brown. Before Amherst, Woods spent 10 years building the D-3 Colorado College program into a perennial top 20 team.
In his first season with the Mammoth, Woods guided the team to a 10-7 overall record and a 7-3 record in the NESCAC. It was a remarkable return to form for the program after not playing the previous two seasons.
Though the Mammoths made it to the NCAA championship game in 2019, the program has been in need of stability after Jon Thompson’s departure. A first-round loss to MIT may have ended Amherst’s season in 2022, but the team is eager to battle for the top spot in the NESCAC once again in 2023.
