The first Italian lacrosse team was the Roma Lacrosse club in 2003. Fabio Antonelli and Robert Corna founded that team and Antonelli went on to found the Italian Lacrosse Federation on June 1, 2007.
Italy’s first international tournament was in the European championships in 2004, its first World Championship appearance in 2006. They are currently ranked 16th by World Lacrosse out of 46 eligible teams.
They will compete in the 2023 World Championships to be held next summer in San Diego.
Team Italy is now coached by longtime Lincoln-Sudbury (Mass.) head coach Brian Vona. With players from Mount St. Mary’s, Union, Cornell, Boston University, Villanova, Springfield College, UMass, Rollins College, Southern New Hampshire and Rutgers, Team Italy put out a talented squad to face one of the Ivy League's top returning teams.
