EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- The University of Tampa has finally broken through and won the Division 2 men's lacrosse championship.
The Spartans downed Mercy, 11-7, to win their first championship on Sunday. Tampa used an explosive six-goal run in the second quarter to build a comfortable lead but still needed a stalwart second-half defensive stand to finish the job.
A slow start to the championship game saw both Tampa and Mercy struggle to get control. It was 1-1 after the first quarter, with both teams really elongating their possessions with multiple shots and sprinting back or to the box to kill any chance of transition.
With the majority of the first part of the game being played in the half-field or trying to recover from turnovers, the game struggled to open up.
