Deven Varney still recalls the conversation fondly, in the backyard of his Cohasset, Mass., home, the one that brought him into uncharted territory within youth lacrosse. There was an injury in net on his older brother’s team and nobody seemed all too willing to step up — until Varney took it upon himself.
That was back in his middle school days, when he first fell in love with the game as a midfielder. But the rest is history. In a pattern that has repeated itself all too often throughout his lacrosse career, Varney has a tendency to embrace not just what’s outside the box but also what’s outside the comfort zone — he thrives with it, and carves his own path.
