In recent years, the University of North Carolina has had no shortage of New England natives in key roles.
Caylee Waters (Darien, Conn.), a four-year starter, departed as a two-time National Goalie of the Year. Recent graduate Ella Hazar (Westwood, Mass.), a midfielder/attacker, holds the program record for assists with 121 to go alongside two All-American seasons. Elise Hennessey (Londonderry, N.H.), now a junior, started 13 games last spring at goalkeeper.
The latest local standout for the Tar Heels? Sophomore defender Emma Trenchard (Windsor, Conn.), a former three-sport star at the Loomis Chaffee School. However, she was convinced a prominent role wouldn't come this quickly.
"I didn't anticipate playing at first," Trenchard said. "I thought, 'I’m a good athlete, maybe I’ll learn the system and as a junior and senior I’ll play.' So I went in with the mentality of no pressure, whatever comes."
