In a defensive, goaltender-driven battle, it took some late heroics both in regulation and overtime to allow Weston to slip past Daniel Hand, 5-4, for the Class M championship and the program’s first state title since 2007.
“The goalies stood on their heads,” said Weston coach Josh Thornton. “For a 5-4 game it was really exciting.”
A 2-2 half rolled into a 4-3 Hand advantage with under a minute to play, though Weston was firmly still alive thanks in large part to the efforts of goalie Andrew Albert, who stopped 20 shots on the day.
“Andrew played his best game that I’ve ever seen in the championship,” said Thornton.
