Commentary: Olympic version of ‘Sixes’ needs some fixes

Last week in Lake Placid, N.Y., USA Lacrosse held an official exhibition with professional and college players. That exhibition was played under a new set of rules that have been streamlined for the Olympics. That ruleset is also called “Sixes."

Sixes is different from both field and box lacrosse. It’s supposed to be a hybrid of both versions of the game -- at least, theoretically.

Removing the (sublime) violent bits of both games, shortening the shot clock to the lifespan of a mayfly, and only allowing six players plus a goalie on the field at once sounds like fun.

It also sounds like a drill you run to end practice instead of a real game.
