EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- In one of the most exciting Division 1 championship games in recent memory, the University of Virginia outscored -- and outlasted -- the resilience of a Maryland squad that came up one goal short in the dying seconds of Monday’s game.
Goalie Alex Rode made a game-saving stop on a breakaway attempt by Maryland face-off man Luke Wierman to preserve the victory, but there was much more to the game than just one play.
And products from the region had a hand in many of them.
For Maryland, former Salisbury school netminder Logan McNaney started the same with a big save on Jeff Conner and finished with five saves in the first quarter, including one at the end of the period that would have given UVA the lead with 12 seconds remaining.
