There have been several attempts to create and sustain a women’s professional lacrosse league, but the latest iteration is the most intriguing venture yet. Athletes Unlimited -- a company that sponsors professional leagues for softball and women’s volleyball -- kicks off its inaugural season of women’s lacrosse today.
The women’s game has undergone a true renaissance in the latter half of the last decade with the incorporation of new rules (most notably a shot clock at the collegiate level), improvements in stick technology, and an influx of creative offensive talent like Kyle Ohlmiller, Kayla Treanor, Taylor Cummings and Marie McCool.
The ACC vs. Big Ten rivalry has come to mirror the men’s game and the next generation of coaching talent has taken the game even further, as evidenced by Boston College’s exciting win over Syracuse in the 2021 championship game.
