Drew Simoneau described the role he played at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, N.H., as a three-way midfielder: playing offense, defense, man-up and man-down, and taking faceoffs.
He admitted that as the years went on, he specialized more and more, but he added that he always hated being referred to as a FOGO. He was a lacrosse player and he was out to prove it.
“I still cringe when kids say, ‘I stand on the sidelines during practice and take faceoffs,’” he said. “It’s not like I take 100 shots every day right-handed and left-handed anymore. I used to. But if I’m not getting in drills in practice, I’m not a useful part of the team. It helps me stay focused. If I’m on the sideline taking clamps and reps, it gets boring watching everyone else play and have fun.”
