The Wellesley (Mass.) High girls didn’t take the field like they were underdogs. With undefeated Walpole looming, the Raiders had thwarted that fear long ago in a close defeat.
In the state championship, it was their time to shine.
On a day when defense reigned, it took Wellesley 16 minutes to score its first goal in the Division 1 championship game. But on the other side, it kept the tough Rebels, who hadn’t scored fewer than nine goals in a game this season, off the scoreboard for 22 minutes.
Even in a hole, Walpole had every reason to believe it was going to power through and at least reach that benchmark.
