UMass among nation’s best at producing MLL draftees

By Jesse Connolly

A recent article on Major League Lacrosse’s website debated which school is the No. 1 lacrosse college in the nation.

UMass was among the schools in the conversation.

While the likes of Duke, Princeton, Syracuse and Virginia were initially hailed for their ability to consistently remain in the hunt for an NCAA title every season, the focus was on which programs have seen the highest number of players selected in the MLL draft over the years.

Georgetown, Notre Dame and UMass tied for fifth place with 22 MLL draftees apiece. Jim Connolly was hailed as the marquee Minuteman. The Ohio Machine star was ECAC Offensive Player of the Year back in 2009.

Maryland placed fourth on the list with 28 draft picks, Johns Hopkins came in third with 30 and Virginia placed second with 39.

The Cavaliers fell four short of Syracuse, who trump all programs across the country with 43. The Orange have won five national titles since 2000. The MLL’s inaugural season was 2001.

The MLL Collegiate Draft will take place Jan. 11, 2013.
