Cannons announce protected roster

The Boston Cannons announced their protected list for the 2012 Major League Lacrosse expansion draft on Wednesday.
MLL teams were permitted to protect 10 to 12 players. The options were to protect one goalie and 11 field players, two goalies and eight field players or no goalies and 12 field players.
Players not protected will be available in the 2012 MLL expansion draft, which will take place on Dec. 7, 2011. During the expansion draft, once a team loses three players, it can pull a player back on to its roster. For each subsequent player lost the team can pull back another player. The most players a team can lose is six. Players not selected in the expansion draft will be eligible to return to their original teams.
Each MLL team will have the opportunity to fill its 40-man rosters in the upcoming 2012 MLL supplemental draft, which will be held on Dec. 14, 2011, and the 2012 MLL collegiate draft, which will take place on Jan. 13, 2012.
The Cannons protected one goalie and 11 field players. Boston’s protected roster includes the following: defenseman Mitch Belisle, attackman Ryan Boyle, attackman Kevin Buchanan, goalie Jordan Burke, midfielder/faceoff specialist Chris Eck, defenseman Brian Farrell, midfielder Pat Heim, midfielder Matt Poskay, midfielder Paul Rabil, defenseman P.T. Ricci, midfielder Brad Ross and midfielder Matt Smalley.
Players left unprotected include: midfielder Josh Amidon, midfielder Shamel Bratton, midfielder Greg Downing, midfielder JJ Morrissey, midfielder/faceoff specialist John Ortolani, attackman Max Quinzani, defenseman Jack Reid, midfielder Mike Stone, defenseman Kyle Sweeney and goalie Kip Turner.
In addition, the Cannons traded defenseman John Lade to the Rochester Rattlers in exchange for the 19th overall selection in the 2012 MLL collegiate draft, and traded the eighth overall pick in the collegiate draft to the Ohio Machine for the 15th pick in the collegiate draft and the 11th pick in the expansion draft.
