HS notebook: New Hampshire sweeps Vermont
by Roger Brown/
New Hampshire had more than one reason to celebrate following this year’s Twin State Lacrosse All-Star Games.
Hours after the New Hampshire girls beat Vermont 18-11, the New Hampshire boys completed the sweep by posting a 13-10 victory. Both games were played at Hanover (N.H.) High School.
Each team’s roster was made up of players who graduated from high school earlier this year.
A Vermont victory was within reach in the girls game, but New Hampshire outscored Vermont 9-2 in the final 12 minutes.
Hollis Brookline’s Hanna Mazzola, Merrimack Valley’s Erin MacLean and Winnacunnet’s Julia MacVane netted three goals apiece for New Hampshire. Mazzola also had three assists.
Mount Mansfield’s Kim Liberty and Burr and Burton’s Sawyer DeVries each collected two goals and two assists to lead the Vermont offense. Vermont also received two goals from Chelsea’s Michelle Upham, Mount Anthony’s Alyssa Amos, and Burr and Burton’s Piper Ferrone. Burlington’s Anne Barker scored Vermont’s other goal.
The Vermont boys played from behind most of the afternoon. New Hampshire built a 12-5 lead at one point.
Bishop Guertin’s Erik Kelly (three goals) and Tom Auger (two) led New Hampshire at the offensive end. Kelly was named New Hampshire’s Division I Player of the Year after he led BG to its second consecutive state championship this spring.
Vermont’s Eric Palmer (CVU) and Sam Polis (Hartford) made seven saves apiece.
Spaulding’s Tory Chouinard led Vermont with three goals and three assists. Champlain Valley’s Lawrence Dee added three goals and two assists.
New Hampshire, which led 5-3 at halftime, has won 17 of the 19 games played in the series.
Whiteway named Mr. Lacrosse
Billerica (Mass.) attackman Grant Whiteway will receive ESPN Boston’s inaugural Mr. Lacrosse Award, which will be given annually to the top male high school lacrosse player in Massachusetts.
Whiteway is one of only six high school players in the nation to have collected at least 500 points during their high school career. He completed his senior season with 539 career points (353 goals).
Whiteway, who has committed to play lacrosse at the University of Massachusetts, broke his own single-season state scoring record when he had 115 goals and 181 points last season.
That followed a record-setting performance during his junior year in which he broke Duxbury’s Max Quinzani’s single-season record for goals (113) and established a record for points in a season with 169.
Whiteway, a two-time Eastern Mass. All-American, was a four-year starter for Billerica.
Committed to lacrosse
Three members of the Andover (Mass.) girls lacrosse team have committed to play Division I college lacrosse next season.
Ally Fazio, the team’s leading scorer, has committed to Connecticut, and twin sisters Kate and Anne Farnham will both play for the University of Massachusetts. Fazio helped Andover win the Division I state championship in girls basketball, and the Farnham sisters each played for the Andover field hockey team, which also won the Division I state championship last season.
The Golden Warriors earned the top seed in the Division 1 North girls lacrosse tournament this spring, and went 23-2 before bowing out to Lincoln-Sudbury in the North final.
All three players have been selected to play in the Under Armour Underclassmen All-American game at Towson University this weekend.
