The 2010-11 U.S. senior women’s national lacrosse team has a distinct New England flavor, with nearly one-third of the 36 players on the preliminary roster having ties to the area. The team – selected after three days of July/August tryouts – will train for the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup.
Six players with New England connections are back on the team, having been part of the 2009 Cup championship. They are Sarah Albrecht from Braintree, Mass. (Northwestern ’06), Sarah Bullard of Needham, Mass. (Duke ’11), Kristen Kjellman – a New England Lacrosse Journal columnist – from Westwood, Mass. (Northwestern ’07), Yale assistant coach Jillian Byers (Notre Dame ’09), and Boston College associate head coach Acacia Walker (Maryland ’05), and goalie Devon Wills (Dartmouth ’06).
Newcomers from New England are Katy Fitzgerald of North Andover, Mass. (North Carolina ’11), Kristin Igoe from Framingham, Mass. (Boston College ’11), Colleen Olsen of Avon, Conn. (Dartmouth ’10), Jennifer Russell of Andover, Mass. (North Carolina ’10), and Paris Waterman (Brown ’11).
Boston University coach Liz Robertshaw and Boston College coach Bowen Holden are assistant coaches for the national team.
U-19 team named
US Lacrosse also released the 24-player roster training for the 2011 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Under-19 World Championships in Hannover, Germany.
Three New England players made the team: Madison Acton of Sudbury, Mass. (Lincoln-Sudbury Regional, ’12), Kelsey Duryea of Beverly, Mass. (Governor’s Academy, ’12), Christine Ferguson of Weston, Mass. (St. Paul’s, ’11),
The U19 team’s next training session is at the US Lacrosse Stars & Stripes festival in Boston, Oct. 9-10.
Salem State women will get varsity status
Salem State University announced in August that women’s lacrosse will have varsity status beginning in 2012. The school has fielded a club team for three years – finishing with a 7-4 record in 2010 -- and will play as a club in 2011. Tara Kelly, who has led the club since 2009, has been hired to coach the team as it transitions to a varsity program. Salem State will compete in the New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance.
