The inaugural World Series of Lacrosse was held at Brown University in July.

The inaugural World Series of Lacrosse brought a new-look summer experience to the game, with boys’ teams from around the country converging on Brown University in late July for what, from the very start, was a unique, high-level lacrosse experience.

The idea behind the tournament is to have a system, akin to Little League Baseball, where town teams and regions play through the course of the regular season in the hopes of earning a spot on the bigger, national stage. While organizers eventually plan to have a regional qualifying system, teams earned their trips to Brown this year in various ways, as league winners, state champs, at-large pool winners and so on. While a few qualifying teams from areas more than 400 miles away were unable to attend due to travel and scheduling problems, the competition between the teams that made the journey was fierce, and the event had a distinct New England accent.

In the 8th-grade Town Team division, Massachusetts South representative Duxbury, Mass., beat Long Island representative West Islip, 10-2.

In addition to the 8th-grade World Series representatives, six town teams played a 6th-grade exhibition tournament, and 24 select club teams from around New  England played for select division titles.

The World Series – run by a large group of regional lacrosse coaches and officials – plans to expand both its field and the regions of the country represented in 2011, including the addition of 6th-grade town team divisions for both boys and girls.
