Salem State women earn varsity status for 2010

by PR Wire Report/

Salem State University Athletic Director Tim Shea is pleased to announce that women's lacrosse has been approved for varsity status for the 2012 season. The team has competed successfully as a club sport for the past three seasons.

"The University is excited to offer this opportunity to such a dedicated and enthusiastic group of female athletes,” Shea said. “Head coach Tara Kelly is the right person at the right time to lead this team to the next level. We look forward to the team's future success."

Kelly, who has led the team since 2009, has worked to build a competitive program.

"The team has been working extremely hard and has fully earned this opportunity to be a varsity program,” she said. “I expect a lot of them as they do of themselves. The program is growing and our induction as a Division 3 varsity sport is still just the beginning. These girls have amazing potential."

Salem State finished with a 7-4 record last season, their best showing since reforming as a club sport two years ago. The team is awaiting expected approval of their application to join the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) where they will compete against Becker College, Bridgewater State, Castleton State College, Elms College, Fitchburg State, Thomas College, Westfield State and Worcester State.
