Alexis Stephen of The Ethel Walker School in Connecticut is one of two recipients of the 2010 Michael Breschi Scholarship.
Stephen will attend Gettysburg (Pa.) College.
The other 2010 recipient is Chapin Speidel of Saint Anne's-Belfield (Va.) School.
The scholarship was established in 2007 to honor the life and memory of Michael Breschi, son of the University of North Carolina's head coach, Joe Breschi. This is the first time since the inception of the scholarship that both a male and female have won the award. Stephen and Speidel's letters of recommendation described them as hard-working and highly respected by peers as well as superiors.
"On behalf of my wife Julie and my daughters, I want to commend these two wonderful student-athletes who exemplify great character, integrity, community service and a tremendous work ethic both in the classroom and on the field," said Coach Breschi. "We are honored to have Michael's US Lacrosse scholarship be used to help Alexis and Chapin achieve all their academic and athletic goals in the coming year. We are very appreciative of the entire US Lacrosse staff for helping our family keep Michael's memory alive through this wonderful scholarship."
The Michael Breschi Scholarship is awarded annually to two graduating high school seniors who plan to attend college and are the son or daughter of a lacrosse coach. The parent or guardian can be either a male or female coach for high school or college, and should be a full-time employee of an educational institution. Other criteria considered include extracurricular activity, internships, community service and employment experience.
"For this scholarship, you're judged more on what you do off the field — and that's what Joe's about," said Jody Martin, US Lacrosse Men's Division director. "And in a tough economy, it's great to help out deserving kids with the finances of their freshman year of college."
