Cannons fall in overtime

The Boston Cannons were defeated by the Chesapeake Bayhawks in sudden-death overtime on Saturday, 16-15, falling in their regular-season finale at Harvard Stadium.
With the loss the Cannons fall to 8-4 in Major League Lacrosse action. Boston secured the top seed for the upcoming MLL Championship Weekend, and will face Chesapeake again in the semifinals on Aug. 21 at noon in Annapolis, Md.
Michael Kimmel scored the game-winning goal for the Bayhawks.
Looking to close out the regular season on a high note, the Cannons got off to a hot start, getting a goal from Kyle Sweeney and a pair from rookie Max Quinzani to take an early 3-0 lead.
Chesapeake’s Ben Hunt responded shortly thereafter with a pair of unassisted goals to pull the Bayhawks within one. Momentum returned to Boston to end the quarter as Brad Ross rifled home a two-point tally and Matt Poskay joined the 50-point club with his 43rd goal of the season.
Boston’s Paul Rabil scored just 43 seconds into the second quarter but Chesapeake controlled play and made the game close with an impressive quarter. Ben Rubeor scored a pair of goals and Kimmel, Jeff Reynolds and Ray Megill also found the back of the net for the Bayhawks.
Justin Smith scored for Boston as the half came to a close with the Cannons clinging to an 8-7 advantage.
As the game turned physical in the third it was the Bayhawks who would strike first, tying the game 8-8 on Brian Carroll’s fifth goal of the season. The Cannons took the lead back less than a minute later as Quinzani notched his third goal of the evening.
Poskay and Rabil gave the Cannons some breathing room as they scored back-to-back goals to give Boston an 11-8 lead. Rubeor and Quinzani traded goals toward the end of the quarter as the Cannons headed into the fourth with a three-goal cushion.
In a back-and-forth final quarter, Chesapeakerallied to force overtime. Smith had two goals in the quarter and Poskay added another but the Cannons were unable to close out the Bayhawks.
Ben Wright and Kyle Dixon notched two-point goals to lead a furious late charge.
Peet Pollion added a goal of his own but it was Dixon’s short-handed unassisted goal with just 42 seconds left that sent the game into sudden death.
In sudden death it was Kimmel’s unassisted goal that propelled the Bayhawks to a victory and gave them momentum heading into their rematch with Bostonon Championship Weekend in two weeks.
NOTES: Boston finished its impressive regular season by leading the league in goals scored with 175. … The Cannons finished the season with a 5-1 home record. Boston’s last home loss was Aug. 6, 2009to the then-Washington Bayhawks 14-13. Following the game the Cannons gave out their team awards, the following players. Honored were: Max Quinzani (Rookie of the Year); Greg Downing (11th Man Award); Ryan McClay (Defensive Player of the Year); Matt Poskay (Offensive Player of the Year); and Ryan Boyle (Team MVP).
