Top seed at stake for Cannons
by PR Wire Report/
Matt Poskay and the Boston Cannons will take on Denver on Saturday night.
The Boston Cannons and Denver Outlaws have both secured spots in the 2010 Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend, but that doesn’t mean Saturday night’s contest in Denver doesn’t have meaning.
With both teams sitting at 7-3 in the MLL standings, the No. 1 seed will be at stake when the teams meet at Invesco Field (9 p.m. EST). A Cannons win will secure the top overall spot in the playoffs for Boston, which has already defeated Denver twice this season.
Denver would need to defeat Boston on Saturday and win again in its season finale or have the Cannons fall next week to earn the No. 1 spot.
Saturday night’s game will air live on Comcast SportsNet New England and online at ESPN3.com.
The Cannons became the first team to clinch a position in the MLL Championship weekend with their 18-10 victory over the defending champion Toronto Nationals (3-7).
The Cannons outscored the Nationals 6-1 in the second quarter to open up a lead they would not relinquish.
Boston’s Matt Poskay entered the game four goals shy of David Evans’ team record of 133 career goals. Toronto limited Poskay to just one goal in the first half, but he scored three goals in the third quarter, including two in the final 10 seconds of the frame to tie the record.
In the fourth quarter Poskay took a feed from Kevin Buchanan and scored the record-setting 134th goal of his Cannons career. On the night, Poskay had five goals and two assists to lead Boston in the win.
Boston’s two wins over the Outlaws this season have come at Harvard Stadium, where the Cannons own a perfect 5-0 record.
Denver enters Saturday night’s game with a 4-0 record at Invesco Field.
Boston topped Denver in its season opener, 16-13, as Poskay scored four goals and Justin Smith added three.
In the second matchup between the teams Poskay again paced the Cannons, this time scoring five goals and an assist, with Paul Rabil adding three goals and three assists.
