The Boston Cannons improved to 7-3 and secured a Major League Lacrosse playoff berth with a 17-10 win over the Toronto Nationals (3-7) at Harvard Stadium on Saturday.
Boston’s Matt Poskay was named Bud Light MVP after scoring five goals (seven points) in a record-setting performance.
Poskay’s fifth goal of the game was the 134th of his career, making him Boston’s all-time leading goal scorer.
The Cannons grabbed a 3-1 advantage in the first quarter on goals by Justin Smith, Kevin Buchanan and Mike Stone, but Toronto rallied to even the score at 3-3 after the opening frame.
Smith opened the second quarter by scoring a highlight reel style goal as he dove fully extended from behind the net and beat the Nationals goalie to give the Cannons a 4-3 lead. A minute later, Brad Ross gave Boston a three-goal cushion as he rifled home a two-point goal. Stone’s second goal of the contest, a top shelf tally, opened up a 7-3 lead for the Cannons with just under 4 minutes remaining in the quarter.
Poskay, MLL’s leading goal scorer, netted his 35th goal of the season as Boston took momentum late in the half. Smith continued to be a thorn in the Nationals’ side as he scored his third goal of the half with under a minute left to put the Cannons on top 9-4 heading into the locker room.
Toronto scored first in the third quarter to make it 9-5, but Buchanan struck for two goals and Poskay scored three more, including two with under 10 seconds left in the quarter to make it 14-8.
Toronto scored three goals to open the fourth quarter and get within six goals at 14-8, before Poskay made Cannons history by scoring his fifth goal of the game and 134th of his career, making him Boston’s all-time goal-scoring leader.
Pat Heim, Chris Eck and Glenn Adams added goals for Boston in the fourth as the Cannons secured the 16-10 win and a playoff berth.
