Canada slips past Team USA

In a rematch of the 2006 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships title game, the United States men were defeated by defending champion Canada, 10-9, in Manchester, England on Saturday.
The loss was Team USA’s first-ever setback in international preliminary-round action.
The teams were tied 6-6 entering the fourth quarter, but Canada’s John Grant Jr. scored twice, including the game-winning goal with 4 minutes, 13 seconds left in the contest.
Team USA led 3-2 after the first quarter as a pair of Boston Cannons scored goals. Boston’s Paul Rabil and Kyle Sweeney tallied, along with Mike Leveille.
Canada shut out the U.S. in the second quarter while scoring a pair of goals to take a 4-3 lead at the half.
The back-and-forth game remained tight in the third quarter as the U.S. scored three times to tie it at 6-6 entering the final frame.
On three occasions in the fourth quarter Canada led by two goals but each time Team USA managed to cut the deficit to one but couldn’t score the equalizer.
The U.S. is 14-3 all-time against Canada, but the Canadians have now won two straight games in the rivalry.
Team USA will play Germany on Sunday.
