The Boston Cannons improved to 6-3 in Major League Lacrosse action with a 16-10 win over the Chesapeake Bayhawks on Saturday night.
Boston’s Paul Rabil was named Bud Light MVP for his four-goal (one 2-point goal), five-point night.
The Cannons quickly turned bad news into a good start on a rainy Saturday night in Annapolis, Md. The team learned earlier in the day that face-off specialist Chris Eck would miss the game with an injury suffered in Thursday night’s All-Star Game.
John Ortolani was called upon to make his first-ever start for the Cannons and wasted no time having an impact as he won the opening face-off and Rabil converted 22 seconds later to give the Cannons the early lead.
Rabil and the Cannons offense were just warming up as they exploded for nine unanswered goals to start the game.
Boston’s Matt Poskay, MLL’s leader in goals and points, scored a pair of goals as five different Cannons found the back of the net to give Boston a 9-1 lead after one quarter.
The Bayhawks scored the first two goals of the second quarter to cut into the Cannons lead and Bayhawks substitute goalie Mike Levin stopped the first two shots he faced in the quarter to keep the Cannons off the scoreboard for over 7 minutes.
Three penalties on the Cannons kept Boston on the defensive and led to the Bayhawks’ fourth unanswered goal.
Kevin Buchanan finally got Boston on the scoreboard with his first goal of the night to make it 10-4. Poskay ended the first half scoring with his third goal of the night and the Cannons went into halftime ahead 11-4.
The Bayhawks came out strong in the third quarter and quickly got back into the game. Kyle Dixon scored a 2-point goal to open the Chesapeakescoring and two more unanswered goals made it an 11-8 game with 8:55to go in the third quarter.
Pat Heim scored the first Cannons goal of the second half and Justin Smith became the eighth Cannon to score on the evening with 3:38 to go in the third as the Cannons once again extended their lead to five at 13-8.
Boston’s Max Quinzani scored on a great feed from Buchanan with 4 seconds left in the quarter as the Cannons took a 14-8 lead into the fourth quarter.
Rabil opened the scoring in the final quarter for the Cannons and Buchanan followed up with his second goal of the night to extend Boston’s lead to 16-8.
