Cannons' Burke earns MLL honor
by PR Wire Report/
Boston Cannons goalie Jordan Burke has been named Major League Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for his second-half play which was instrumental in the Cannons’ 17-14 comeback win against Long Island.
The Cannons rallied from an eight-goal deficit to improve to 5-2, which places them alone atop the MLL standings.
With the Cannons trailing 13-5 in the third quarter, head coach Bill Daye replaced starting goalie Kip Turner with Burke, who had seen only 3 minutes, 14 seconds of playing time all season before the switch.
The former Brown University All-American stood tall, denying one attempt after the other as the Cannons slowly chipped away at the deficit.
Burke allowed his teammates the time necessary to recover as they scored seven points in the third quarter to cut the lead to just one, 13-12. In the fourth quarter Boston continued to roll, outscoring Long Island 5-1 to complete the wild comeback.
Burke turned away seven of eight shot attempts from the Lizards, allowing just one goal in a little under 26 minutes in net. While he was in net for just under a half, Burke’s play was vital to the Cannons’ comeback win and he was honored as the Bud Light MVP of the game for his performance.
“We were all unbelievable out there, it was great getting the call to go out there and help my team, but I have to give all the credit to this team, we didn’t fold when the going got tough,” said Burke after the come-from-behind victory.
The Cannons will return to action when they go on the road to face the Toronto Nationals on Thursday, July 1 at 7 p.m.
The game will be aired live on Comcast SportsNet New England.
