HS notebook: St. John's Prep wins Mass. title

by Roger Brown/

At halftime, it looked like the Duxbury High School boys lacrosse program was headed to its seventh straight Massachusetts Division I championship. With 18 seconds left in regulation it looked that way too.

It was St. John’s Prep that celebrated this year’s title, however. James Fahey’s overtime goal handed the Eagles a 12-11 victory Saturday at Harvard Stadium.

“This is the best high school lacrosse game I’ve ever been a part of, it’s just awesome,’’ Fahey told The Boston Globe. “We worked so hard this season. We’ve had our ups and downs, we’ve had hard times, but this is what it’s all about.’’

Seamus Connelly gave Duxbury a one-goal lead when he scored with 18 seconds left in regulation, but Garrett Campbell collected the rebound of Colin Blackwell’s shot and scored to force overtime. Campbell scored a game-high four goals.

St. John’s Prep goalkeeper Nick Triano made 12 saves, nine of which came in the first half.

The game was a rematch of last year’s Division I championship game. Duxbury scored in the final minute of that contest to prevail 13-12.

St. John’s Prep also beat Duxbury 12-7 during the regular season.

In other Massachusetts championship games:

►Midfielder Jack McDermott collected five goals and four assists to help Medfield claim the Division 2 boys championship by beating Longmeadow19-6 Saturday.

Attackman Matt Bletzer added five goals and three assists.

►Senior midfielder Tanner Guarino scored her second goal of the game with one second to play to give Framingham an 8-7 victory over Longmeadow in Saturday’s Division I girls lacrosse state championship game.

Fifteen seconds earlier Longmeadow’s Paige Cuscovitch made it a 7-7 contest by scoring her second goal of the game.

►Despite seven goals from Winchester’s Lauren Sullivan, the Norwood girls won the Division 2 title for the second time in as many years with a 15-10 triumph at Babson College.

Freshman goaltender Callahan Kent made 12 saves for Norwell, which finished the season with a 21-1-1 record.

It was the first time Winchester (19-3) allowed double-digit goals in the tournament.

Maine events

Yarmouth’s two-year reign as Maine’s Class B boys lacrosse champion came to an end Saturday night, when Cape Elizabeth posed a 7-6 victory in the Class B championship game at Portland’s Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Tom Foden played despite a shoulder injury and scored three goals for CapeElizabeth, which won its first state title in nine years.

It was the third meeting between the teams this season. Yarmouth prevailed 8-4 on May 5, and Cape Elizabeth rallied from a five-goal deficit to post a 10-8 victory on May 28. Cape Elizabeth’s victory was Yarmouth’s first loss in nearly two years.

"I think we’ve had teams that may have been better skill-wise, but I don’t think there’s been a team in the past that has gotten better every single day," Cape Elizabeth coach Ben Raymond told the Portland Press Herald.

Cape Elizabeth, which led 4-3 at halftime, completed its season with a 12-3 record. Yarmouth finished 13-2.

In other Maine championship games:

►Scarborough knocked off previously unbeaten Portland to win Maine’s Class A boys championship.

Nick Neugebauer collected three goals in Scarborough’s 8-6 victory. The offensive output was Portland’s lowest of the season.

Portland ended the regular season by beating Scarborough 16-12. Portland’s Caleb Kenney, who had 10 goals in that contest, scored three times in the championship game.

The victory improved Scarborough’s record to 11-4. Portland finished 14-1.

►Scarborough (15-0) capped a perfect season with an 11-7 triumph over Mt. Ararat in the Class A girls championship game.

Mt. Ararat (10-5) reached the championship game for the first time in the program’s history.

►The North Yarmouth Academy girls won the program’s first state title by beating Waynflete 7-3 in the Class B state championship game.

Goaltender Ashley Salerno made 12 saves for NYA, which lost to Waynflete in the 2008 and 209 Class B title games. NYA completed its season with a 12-3 record.
