HS notebook: Rhode Island champs crowned

Senior David Appolonia scored with seven seconds remaining in overtime to give second-seeded Moses Brown a 9-8 victory over top-seeded LaSalle in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Division I boys lacrosse championship game Sunday at Rhode Island College.
La Salle beat Moses Brown twice during the regular season and entered the championship game with a 14-0 record. Moses Brown, which won the 2009 championship, finished the season with a 15-3 record.
Moses Brown goalie Nick Capalbo made nine saves and was named the game’s most valuable player.
Wes Hardman and Cole Morrissette each scored three goals for the Quakers. Geoffrey Hogan, Chris Romano and Appolonia collected the other goals.
Brady O'Donnell, Ryan Poirier, Andrew Messner and Mike Kemmy each scored two goals for La Salle, which received eight saves from Tim Ryan.
Division II boys: Mount Hope’s 2010 season ended the same way its 2009 season did – with a victory over Mount St. Charles in the Division II championship game. The Huskies made it back-to-back titles with an 8-2 triumph Monday.
Top-seeded Mount Hope finished the season with a 14-1 overall record. Its only loss came against Division I La Salle. Third-seeded Mount St. Charles finished with a 9-5 record.
Following the game Mount Hope coach Scot Clarke was named the U.S. Lacrosse Association’s Coach of the Year for Rhode Island.
Division IIIboys: Senior Ryan MacGowan scored at 1:53 of overtime Sunday to give second-seeded Middletown an 8-7 victory over Cumberland in the Division III championship game.
Middletown avenged a 5-4 loss to Cumberland in the 2009 Division III championship game and spoiled Cumberland’s bid for an unbeaten season. The Clippers entered the game with a 15-0 record.
Middletown completed its season with a 14-3 record.
Division I girls: Second-seeded Barrington won the program’s third Division I championship in the last four years by beating top-seeded LaSalle 11-9.
Barrington’s Becky Bracken scored two goals and assisted on another. She finished the season with 52 goals and 10 assists.
Division II girls: Sophomore Alex Briody scored three goals to lead top-seeded Bay View to an 11-8 triumph over second-seeded Mount Hope in the Division II title game.
Bay View reached the Division II championship game – but failed to win the title – in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Division III girls: Top-seeded South Kingstown won its second consecutive championship by beating second-seeded East Providence 15-10 in the Division III championship game.
South Kingstown’s Olivia Mattyasovszky scored a game-high seven goals.
Alex Amaral and Chantelle Plouffe each scored three goals for East Providence, which made its first title-game appearance in its third-year as a varsity program.
Crowning achievements
New Hampshire crowned four state champions Tuesday, when the Londonderry girls, the Bishop Guertin girls, the Bow boys and the Derryfield boys all prevailed in their respective championship games.
Top-seeded Londonderry beat second-seeded Pinkerton 8-3 in the Division I game at Southern New Hampshire University, and third-seeded Bishop Guertin edged fourth-seeded Portsmouth 10-9 in the Division II game at Southern New Hampshire University.
Top-seeded Bow beat second-seeded Bedford 14-13 at Exeter High School, and second-seeded Derryfield upset top-seeded Kingswood at Nashua’s Stellos Stadium.
Two more championship games will be played Wednesday, when the top-seeded Bishop Guertin boys take on second-seeded Exeter in the Division I championship game at Stellos Stadium, and the top-seeded Hollis-Brookline girls face second-seeded Kearsarge in the Division III championship game at Southern New Hampshire University.
Top Dogs
Caleb Kenney, junior midfielder, collected a career-high 10 goals to help the Portland (Maine) boys cap an unbeaten regular season by beating Scarborough 16-12.
Portland, which won last year’s Class A state championship, will be the No. 1 seed for the Eastern Maine Class A tournament.
