Griffin Meehan scored 105 points for Keene State in 2010.

Griffin Meehan is the highest-scoring New England lacrosse player you probably know nothing about. The Simsbury, Conn., native led the nation in scoring this year, registering 105 points (5.53 per game) for the Keene State (N.H.) Owls. His 69 goals and 36 assists both broke Keene records, and he is on a pace to shatter the school’s all-time scoring record, though he would far prefer to talk about Keene’s progress in the NCAA tournament – a first-round victory over Castleton (Vt.) State College before losing to 2009 champion SUNY-Cortland – to his own achievements. At 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, Meehan is a prototypical attackman who started playing when he was six-years-old and anticipates lacrosse being a part of his life for many years to come. — Phillip Shore

Q & A

You were a high school All-American. Why didn’t you wind up at a Division 1 school? I had a few friends that went D-1 and they liked it and they thought they were getting a great education but they also said it was a job. You were locked in as an athlete. I had gotten some offers but I thought D-3 would suit me better because I’m a laid-back kid. I had committed to Quinnipiac but D-1 just wasn’t for me.

Why Keene? I came up for an overnight almost like a recruiting visit. I liked a lot of the kids on the team. It was a quiet town in New Hampshire. I fell in love with the school.

What do you believe is your best skill? Hustling. If you’re one of the leaders of your team and you hustle on the ride or go hard for every ground ball, it shows good leadership.

Do you have any aspirations to play professionally for the Boston Blazers or Boston Cannons? Yeah I think I’ll probably try out for maybe an NLL team just because my coach at Keene played in the NLL and he has a lot of connections. If I could make it I’d definitely be down to play in the NLL. I don’t know about the MLL though, I think those guys are a little too good for me.

What has been the highlight of your career? In high school when we traveled to Fairfield Prep, they were No. 10 in the state or something and we went there and beat them to finish undefeated. It wasn’t the last game, but the rest were kind of cupcake games. And we had never beaten them in school history, so it was kind of a big deal.
