College notebook: NE connection leads Duke
by Ed Flaherty/
The Duke University men’s lacrosse team’s New England connection was in full effect over the weekend in Baltimore, providing the two biggest goals on the biggest stage as the Blue Devils won their first-ever national championship.
Duke senior Max Quinzani (Duxbury, Mass.) provided the heroics against Virginia in Saturday night’s semifinal victory, scoring the game-winning goal with just 12 seconds remaining in regulation.
Fellow New Englander CJ Costabile, a sophomore from New Fairfield, Conn., took things a step further on Monday as he won the opening faceoff in overtime against Notre Dame in the national championship game and raced straight down the field before firing home the title-clinching goal in Duke’s 6-5 win.
"It's sick,” Costabile said in an NCAA press release following the championship game victory. “The best feeling about it is we set this goal from the beginning of the year. Guys who have been here before me, [those guys] who have been here three times before and finally seeing them walk off that field with a big smile on their faces is the best moment about that."
On the game-winning play, Costabile won the faceoff against Notre Dame’s Trever Sipperly and raced straight down the field, firing a shot high over Notre Dame goalkeeper Scott Rodgers’ right shoulder.
The goal was just the 11th of Costabile’s Duke career and his first game-winning tally for the Blue Devils.
“I let it fly,” Costabile said in a TV interview following the game. “I just let it go and see where it ends up.”
Rodgers, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, said facing a rushing Costabile was a difficult situation.
"You don't really know what you are going to get,” he said in an NCAA press release. “They are coming at you with a 6-foot pole and they can choose to go low or high. We had two guys chasing back on that last play and that isn't what a goalie wants to see. Our game wasn't lost on one play though; it's lost throughout the game."
Costabile was 6-for-10 on faceoffs throughout the game and took control quickly on the game-winning play.
"It was a battle throughout the game, there was that one faceoff that went for over 25 seconds,” he said. “It was a battle and to come out that clean [on the final faceoff], to get my hands in there and pull it out really quick the ball popped out in front of me, it was awesome. I mean the faceoff game is such a team thing and my wings did a great job on that, allowing me to pick up that ground ball really easily."
“CJ Costabile made a play at the end and sometimes in big games somebody’s got to make a big play,” Duke coach John Danowski said of the game-winning goal in a TV interview.
While Quinzani was held to just an assist in the championship game, marking the first game all season he didn’t score a goal for the Blue Devils, the senior tallied four goals in the semifinals against Virginia, including the game-winning tally.
On the game-winning goal, Quinzani took a feed from Ned Crotty and scored with 12 seconds remaining, propelling Duke to the national title game.
Crotty (63 assists in 2010) and Quinzani (68 goals in 2010) have a chemistry that helped them connect on the game-winner.
"I have all the confidence in him and we let him do it,” Quinzani said of Crotty in an NCAA press release. “I tell him all the time that if you throw it, at least you know I'm going to catch it and something good is going to happen.”
“We certainly didn't design it for Ned to throw it to Max,” Danowski said in an NCAA press release. “We would have been delighted for anybody to catch it and throw it in at that point. The way it worked out today was special because those kids have worked so hard."
Quinzani closes his career with an NCAA-best streak of 66 games with a goal or an assist. He scored 199 goals, second most in Duke and NCAA history and helped the Blue Devils to a 65-13 record in his 78 career games.
For their efforts, Quinzani and Costabile were both selected to the all-tournament team.
Other New Englanders on the Duke roster include David Lawson (Westford, Mass.), Parker McKee (Old Greenwich, Conn.), Will McKee (Old Greenwich, Conn.), Henry Meyer (Newton, Mass.), Tom Montelli (Weston, Conn.), Jason Orlando (Sudbury, Mass.), Sam Payton (Cos Cob, Conn.), Robert Rotanz (Westport, Conn.), Sam Spillane (Darien, Conn.) and Dan Theodoridis (Norwalk, Conn.).
