HS notebook: Westwood girls win showdown

by Roger Brown/

Very little separated the Westwood and Wellesley High School girls lacrosse teams Tuesday.

Each team entered the contest unbeaten, but only Westwood stayed that way. Senior Misha Beatty scored six goals and assisted on another to help the Wolverines edge the Raiders 16-15 in the final regular-season game for both programs.

Westwood, which won the Division I state championship in 2008 and 2009, improved its record to 19-0 with the victory. Blake Dietrick scored eight goals for Wellesley, which dropped to 15-1-2.

“They understood the level of opponent, the level of the defense and they rose to that,” Westwood coach Leslie Frank told The Boston Globe.  “I thought it was a good physical game.”

Westwood entered the day ranked No. 1 in Massachusetts, and No. 18 in the country by Laxpower.com.

The loss ended Wellesley’s 13-game winning streak. The Raiders, who tied two of their first three games, were allowing an average of five goals per game through their first 17 contests.

Westwood knocked Wellesley out of the playoffs in 2008 and 2009. Wellesley was unbeaten until it lost to Westwood last season.

Wellesleywas seeking its first victory against Westwood since 2006.

Bulldog mentality

The Portland (Maine) High School boys won the Class A state championship last season, and the Bulldogs seem capable of winning another state title this spring.

Portland improved its record to 9-0 by beating Gorham 18-4 on May 19.

Bronson Guimond and Max Pierter each scored four goals for the Bulldogs.

Salisbury finishes on top

The SalisburySchool boys captured their first outright Western New England Prep School Lacrosse Association championship with a 9-3 triumph over Choate Rosemary Hall on May 19.

The victory improved Salisbury’s record to 13-1 and extended the team’s winning streak to 13 games. Salisbury’s only loss came in its opening game against Boys Latin of Maryland.

Before it beat Choate Rosemary Hall, Salisbury defeated Deerfield Academy and Avon Old Farms to compete the WNEPSLA portion of its schedule unbeaten.
