HS notebook: Cheshire tops Fairfield Prep

by Roger Brown/

Fairfield Prep’s unbeaten record against in-state opponents came to an end Tuesday, when Cheshire’s Nick Carisio scored with 3:17 remaining to give the Rams a 9-8 victory at Fairfield University’s Alumni Field.

The victory raised Cheshire’s record to 14-1. Fairfield Prep dropped to 12-3 overall and 9-1 against Connecticut competition.

“We played well for 12 minutes and we didn’t play well for 30 minutes,” Fairfield Prep coach Chris Smalkais told the Connecticut Post. “It’s not that they stopped us. We had no flow to our game.

“I don’t think we have to change much in what we do. We do have to keep our lacrosse IQ and finish our scoring chances.”

Cheshire entered the contest ranked third in Connecticut’s Division L standings, one spot behind Fairfield Prep. After the game the teams had switched positions in the standings. Staples (15-0) occupies the top position.

Fairfield Prep led 4-0 after one quarter, and held a 5-3 lead at halftime. Cheshire dominated the third quarter, however. The Rams scored the only two goals in the third and the first in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead.

Fairfield Prep’s Connor Byrne scored three of his game-high four goals in the fourth, and his fourth goal made it an 8-8 game 36 second before Carisio scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Mike Devine led Cheshire with three goals. Mike Jordan added two goals for the Rams, who received nine saves from Nate Gaudio. Fairfield Prep’s Gil Long stopped 12 shots.

“We’ve got to overcome these obstacles if we want to be a championship team,”  Byrne said.
